TIAMAT

Her life was one of solitude, yet surrounded by multitudes. Born as royalty, she was raised to naturally look down upon the masses of common people. She expected everything to be handed to her, to be done for her. She had attendants and servants to wait upon her every word and desire. If she wished to go somewhere, she was carried in a six man cart on their shoulders. Her carriage, extravagant wood with golden trim. Her man-servants were the largest and strongest, handsome and bronzed skinned.

Her people praised her as their next ruler, a queen, an empress, a goddess. Had she done things in her life to receive such praise and worship? Maybe, maybe not. Whatever the case, the right of rulership and entitlement was deeply engraved into her soul. All of these things seemed to come to naught, at the moment of her demise.

It had come so suddenly in the form of words- a war. Not just any war, but a war of rebellion. The people loved her: so why would they rebel? The answer was with her parents... some secret that they had not decided to share with their daughter who would be the next ruler. Possibly they expected their secrets to die with them and everything would go smoothly for Taimat. This wasn't the case. The first one to die, would be her father. Then her mother. Still young and not street-smart, Taimat would soon follow her parents' example. Her most trusted servants, were the first to turn on her.

The first few days of her remainder of life as a human, were spent on the run. Half of her servants had betrayed her. Most of them had fled and only a few remained. it wouldn't be long until even those numbers dwindled. Her loyal servants were murdered by the conniving and hateful servants and then Taimat was bound by chains. Her, the next ruler of the empire... to be bound by chains.

With no one left to protect or save her, she was handed over to the evil vices of mankind. Ultimately to end up as a sacrifice to the very divine beings her people worshiped. Tied to an offering table, her heart was cut from her chest while she yet lived. Try as she might, she couldn't move- nor could she even scream. As her mouth had been gagged. She vowed in her soul, to take revenge upon everyone and everything. As she closed her mortal eyes for the last time, she entered a state of darkness.

The state of darkness was like a deep sleep, a lull of pitch black serenity that developed all of her sensations and memories. Then, with a brilliance- she opened her eyes again- to the sound of a mournful but shrill shriek. She wasn't sure of where it came from at first, then it dawned upon her... she was making the sound! Everyhting was different in her sight, even the sensation of her body. Yet all she really seemed to care about, was the ravenous hunger in her body... and the hateful desire for revenge that burned in her soul.

She had not yet become a hollow, no- simply a spirit. A vengeful spirit whom remained in the world of the living and clung to her darkness. A chain hung from her chest, not unlike the ones which had imprisoned her in life. The only difference being, this one was eating itself slowly. What would happen to her when it was gone? She didn't know, but she would do everything within her power to bring suffering to humans.

The process would take about a year's time, yet for her... it felt like an eternity. Everything in her life that she had known and loved, was being torn down and destroyed by her previously loyal servants and people. The humans were removing every aspect of the royal family and everything that they stood for. Her castles tumbled, her servants cursed her name, her father's statues were demolished and her mother was the gossip of old ladies. Everything was treasonous! Not a single human alive in the empire deserved to live- down to the very babes! Yet try as she might, Taimat couldn't find the strength within her to interact with the living world.

Frustration, anger and resentment welled within her. The chain attached to her spirit had grown shorter, yet it seemed so slow. Curiously, she found it slow and yet too fast at the same time. She had no idea what would happen once the chain was gone. Would she cease to exist? That meant that she could no longer behold the evils of her peoples' betrayal. On one hand, that was a good thing. Yet she refused to allow herself the bliss and satisfaction of peace. She could not stand by and do nothing as the humans continued to disrespect her image and memories.

While she was a spirit, she remained close to the scene of her death. The crimson stains of the sacrificial table, never again to be used after her death. For whatever reason, her sacrifice had been the last of her people- a final offering of sorts. For what reason, Taimat didn't know- nor would the priests talk about it in idle moments. Whatever secret it had, remained that way with the death of her family. A curse maybe? A promise to the gods? She could only speculate as to why... and the unknowing caused her to think up all sorts of things- the worst kinds of things. Like what had happened to her body after she had died? Had they eaten her? Maybe had their way with her corpse? Her consciousness was on the verge on insanity and all that kept it intact, was her desire to destroy this empire and its people.

So much time had passed since the moment of her death, but nothing changed for Taimat. Her spiritual body remained the same, except of course for the length of the chain attached to her spiritual body. Human life changed so much in a year's time however. No longer were there any signs of a previous ruler. Her family had been replaced by a child ruler- easily manipulated by the council. On the surface, everyone was happy. Peace had come across the land and not a single loyal follower or servant of Taimat remained. Her name and the family line were no longer spoken of, nor were they included in history or religion. Taimat had simply been erased from existence! Was this the work of the priests? Or was a cosmic power at play? Being a lingering spirit was not something she had ever imagined, nor heard of from the gods... so she could only assume it was forbidden to remember the previous royal family. She fumed with outrage at the realization. All the while, her soul chain continued to be consumed on an impartial basis.

It was near the end of a full year's time, that the soul chain on Tiamat's body became dangerously close to being completely gone. Devouring itself, only a single link remained. The girl could feel an unease in her being- her soul had become tainted and darkened since her death and refusal to move on into non-existence. She knew for a long time now, that she had been damned. Yet she still felt unease as she knew her soul was warping and changing, the process matched the pace of the devouring of her soul chain. She had come to the realization that once her chain was completely gone, she would no longer be herself- at least, the self she was used to and loved. She would disappear, yet she refused to allow her hatred and desire to revenge to slip away. Day after day, she thought of all sorts of ways to torture and murder the humans. Her soul had become so warped in this time frame, that she even fancied the idea of eating the traitors. Something so aghast that a normal "her" wouldn't consider.

Finally, the moment of truth was upon her. The final link in her soul chain withered away as it was consumed. She could feel the change in her soul, as dark power erupted from deep within. Like a chrysanthemum blooming in powerful moonlight, powerful spiritual energy enveloped her- bathing her in saturated darkness. The process did not take too long, but the pain was excruciating. She felt as though her spiritual body and mind were being ripped to shreds and everything was being replaced by an even more powerful hunger and hatred. Like with her first death, a wail followed- this one, being much more powerful and tangible in the human world.

As she stomped her foot in writhing agony, her foot actually destroyed something. She continued to flail as her human spirit body was warped into a black husk with a white mask for a face. No longer did she walk upon two feet- but now crawled upon all four. She was no longer a humanoid form, but a quadruped with wings. A dragon from epic stories from hunters.

Having evolved and changed, she hardly knew herself anymore- only bits and pieces of her memories and emotions remained. The only two things that were clear to her.. was the deep seated hunger in her soul... and the desire to bring suffering upon the humans. Like a predator, she took flight. Being trapped for so long inside the temple near her place of death, she busted out of the temple's confining walls, destroying the place like an explosion. Her dragon form descended upon the unsuspecting empire, going from home to home, devouring man woman and child. Nothing ever felt so satisfying to her existence. This new power.. and the taste of human souls!
